Much like the shape of a football, astigmatism causes the cornea to become curved more in one direction than another. Until recently, patients suffering from astigmatism had to additionally undergo corneal refractive surgery (Limbal Relaxation Incisions, LASIK or PRK) or remain dependent on glasses in addition to lens implant surgery.

A revolutionary new option for intraocular lenses (IOLs) has paved the way for patients with astigmatism. Specifically shaped to accommodate patients with astigmatism, Toric IOLs create a sense of balance for the irregularly shaped cornea. Once this specialized IOL is implanted, the astigmatism is virtually eliminated.

There is a selection of manufacturers who produce Toric IOLs and they each correct varying levels of astigmatism. You will need to work with your doctor to establish a treatment plan to include the Toric IOL that will best suit your particular visual needs. Supplementary costs are typically associated with these lenses as they are considered”premium.”
