Astigmatism

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped more like an oblong football than a spherical baseball, which is the normal shape. The oblong shape causes light rays to focus on two points in the back of your eye, rather than on just one.

Individuals with astigmatism frequently experience blurred or shadowed vision as a result of the misfocused light. Astigmatism is very common and can accompany other forms of refractive error like hyperopia, myopia, and presbyopia.

At Williamson Eye Center, we help to diagnose the refractive errors causing your vision problems.

Can Astigmatism be Treated?

Visual errors caused by astigmatism can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses or during a refractive surgery such as LASIK or cataract surgery.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Highly astigmatic children should be checked for glasses or contacts every year or so, and adults every 2 to 3 years – more frequently, of course, if you start having any symptoms that seem to be related to your eyes.
